Delete Your Account and Data
You can delete your Read OutWard account and data at any time without giving a reason. Deletion cannot be undone, so export anything you want to keep first.
Before you delete#
- Cancel auto-renewal. If you subscribed through the App Store, cancel in iPhone Settings › your name › Subscriptions; deleting your account does not stop Apple from charging you. If you subscribed with a card on the web, cancel first in Settings › Account & Sync › Manage auto-renewal or on the web under My › Membership; otherwise the account cannot be deleted.
- Export your data (optional). Use Settings › Account & Sync › Export account data for a full export, or export your word list and learning record from My English.
Delete your account in the app#
- Open Read OutWard and go to My › Settings › Account & Sync (also reachable from the bottom of the Account & Sign-in page).
- Tap Delete account, read the notice, type DELETE and tap Permanently delete account.
- If you have not signed in for a while, we first ask you to verify with an email or phone code.
Deletion takes effect immediately, and the app also clears that account’s learning records and downloads from the device. If deletion is interrupted, open Account & Sync again and tap Confirm last deletion to finish.
On the web: sign in at readoutward.com, open Preferences & data in settings, choose Delete account and confirm; the same page offers Export account data.
Request deletion by email#
If you cannot use the app (for example you uninstalled it or changed phones), email support@readoutward.com from the email address on the account, with the subject “Delete account”, and tell us how you sign in (Apple, Google, email or phone). To prevent impersonation we may ask you to verify your identity. We complete the deletion and reply within 15 working days after verification.
Accounts that use Sign in with Apple or Google#
- When you delete your account, we revoke Read OutWard’s Sign in with Apple authorisation with Apple and delete the Apple and Google sign-in details we hold.
- You can also choose Stop Using Apple ID for Read OutWard in iPhone Settings › your name › Sign-In & Security › Sign in with Apple, or remove Read OutWard under Third-party apps & services in your Google Account. That only stops you signing in that way and does not delete your Read OutWard account or data; delete your account as described above as well.
- We never store your Apple or Google password, and we do not keep Google access tokens.
What is deleted#
When you delete your account, we delete:
- your profile, nickname, avatar, phone number, Apple / Google sign-in details and sessions;
- word cards, reviews, reading and listening positions, study time, plans, favourites, highlights and notes, and badges;
- imported articles, e-books, feeds and subtitles, and narration generated for them;
- pronunciation results, scene conversation records, AI explanation requests and your AI credit history;
- website and app analytics records, push devices and notification settings, and support feedback with screenshots;
- study-buddy settings and progress; active buddy challenges end.
What we keep, and why#
To meet legal obligations, handle disputes and prevent abuse, we keep the following after deletion:
- payment and transaction records (App Store and Stripe transaction IDs, amounts, refunds), for as long as accounting and tax law requires (generally 7 years);
- a de-identified account record: the account number remains and the email is replaced with a placeholder that does not identify you, to link the payment records above;
- records of redemption codes, referral rewards and gifted memberships, to prevent repeat claims;
- email delivery records (including the recipient address), to troubleshoot delivery and handle complaints;
- in past study-buddy challenges, the display name you used still appears in the other person’s history; block and report records are kept to protect other users;
- database disaster-recovery points expire after at most 30 days, after which the data in them no longer exists.
Deleting only some data#
- In the app you can delete individual notes, word cards and imports, and one or all pronunciation results.
- Turning off Keep recordings in Settings deletes the pronunciation recordings stored on your phone immediately.
- Records made while signed out exist only on your device or in your browser: uninstall the app or clear the site’s data in your browser to delete them.
- To delete other specific data, email support@readoutward.com.
